The powerful military [image] Egypt said that they have begun to take measures necessary to protect the nation"and support the"legitimate demands"of the people in the middle of the reports that embattled President Hosni Mubarak [Images] can intervene down soon and transfer power to his Deputy Omar Suleiman.
As the protest against the domination of 30-year Mubarak entered the 17th day today, Hossan Badrawi, Secretary General of the National Democratic Party (NDP), said that he "hopes" that Mubarak will transfer power to Vice-President Omar Suleiman. "I expect the President to meet the demands of the people, because what matters to him at the end of the day is the stability of the country." The position is not important for him, "Badrawi told BBC."
The Supreme Council of Egyptian Forces convened a meeting in response to the current political crisis after which a statement is issued. Thursday meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Mohamed Tantawi, instead of Mubarak, who, as President, would normally have chaired the meeting.
"Based on the liability of the armed forces and its commitment to protect the population and its delicacy to protect the nation... and in support of legitimate demand of the people the army will continue meeting on an ongoing basis to examine the measures to be taken to protect the nation and winnings and ambitions of great Egyptian people," the statement read on State television after other programs were interrupted.
The Declaration of the army met with a roar of approval of the large crowd on-site Tahrir, the hub of the protest anti-Mubarak in the heart of the capital. Egyptian army earlier, high Commander Hassan al-Roweni said protesters instead that "everything you want will be realized."
Earlier, Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq said President Mubarak scenario resign was under discussion. News agency MENA official "everything is in the hands of President Hosni Mubarak and no decision has been made yet," quoted him saying.
